| The conventional method for decontamination of NORM contaminated equipment is to transport the equipment to a decontaminated facility where a washing machine will water blast the equipment to remove all the contaminated sludge from the equipment. The water from the blasting will be collected and securely stored since the water will contain the contaminants. This method however has proven to be expensive and carries a lot of hazard, due to the risks and costs associated with transporting the NORM, and due to the fact that the water used for decontamination has to be stored safely from the time of the decontamination onwards, a decontamination process using a water blasting machine can result in cubic meters of contaminated water that has to be stored at the clients expense.
Our company has developed a portable decontamination unit that goes to the clients site and does the decontamination using a special mineral composite blast combined with a special gel instead of water blasting. This unit eliminates the costs and hazards of transporting the contaminated equipment, it reduces the volume of the waste stream produced by 95%, and it reduces the time it takes for the equipment to be decontaminated. It also makes the produced waste a lot safer to handle since the gel encapsulates the radioactive particles thus reducing the ability to spill and contaminate the surrounding. This is a key issue for the client since the waste produced during the decontamination is considered a property of the client and it is the responsibility of the client to store it safely. Our unit is self efficient, it has a small footprint (40 ft x 10 ft), and it is fast. We can completely decontaminate a contaminated tubular (inside and out) in 20 minutes.
